Elon Musk is all-in on environmental sustainability. However, his ideas about reducing carbon emissions connected to energy production may cause some people, including his fans, to squirm. For example, Musk has called for more nuclear power plants; calling on European companies to invest in more nuclear power.

Sharing his views on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, Musk tweeted, “Hopefully, it is now extremely obvious that Europe should restart dormant nuclear power stations and increase the power output of existing ones. This is 'critical' to national and international security.”

Musk was focused on how European countries could reduce their dependence on Russian oil and gas. Russia provides about 40 percent of the energy supplied to EU nations. The daily transaction for energy allows Russia to fund its war, despite mounting sanctions.

Anticipating the usual criticism of nuclear energy, Musk offered to eat food grown near nuclear plants. He suggested the worst location for radiation and offered to eat a meal there on live TV. He maintained that radiation risk is not as severe as people believed and mentioned he had eaten in Fukushima, Japan, after the nuclear disaster.

Meanwhile, Musk had earlier called for the US to increase its local oil and gas production to counter the effects of shunning Russian oil and gas. This was despite the move being a negative for his car company. The Tesla CEO was only being pragmatic in his assessment of the world’s energy needs.

Musk has been outspoken on various topics that he is passionate about, including free speech which continues in an ongoing Twitter drama. In connection to the war in Ukraine, Musk has done more than dish out advice on weaning countries off Russian energy. He has helped the embattled country remain connected to the rest of the world by setting up Starlink satellite internet and facilitating the delivery of dish receivers. Musk even offered to fight with Vladimir Putin one-on-one to determine the fate of Ukraine.
