The Boring Company had its origin in a tweet by Elon Musk. He was sitting in traffic during rush hour in Los Angeles, US, when he wrote, on December 18, 2016:
Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging...
Moments later, he confirmed he was serious about digging tunnels by tweeting:
I am actually going to do this. It shall be called 'The Boring Company’.
The Boring Company aims to solve the problem Musk described as “soul-destroying traffic” by creating an underground means of transport. It envisions a network of underground interconnected corridors that allow high speed movement. However, it wants to do this at very reduced cost, compared to the normal cost of tunneling.
To achieve this feat, The Boring Company has developed technology that has reduced the cost by a factor of 10 and takes less time for tunneling.
Vision
The Boring Company envisions high-tech transportation in underground pods with capacity for up to16 passengers at a time and at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour. It has shared computer generated videos and images of its future underground stations and tunnels.Contracts and Bids
Despite being a relatively young company, The Boring Company has been involved in several high profile projects. One of such is the underground project at the Las Vegas Convention Center, known as the LVCC Loop. It consists of two tunnels and is set to open in June 2021. The tunnels are designed to handle 4,400 people per hour.
The Boring Company also submitted a bid for the high speed transportation network that the city of Chicago wants to construct between its downtown and the O’Hare Airport.
The company has worked on a test tunnel in Hawthorne, California that is 2 miles long, close to SpaceX’s headquarters.
Representatives of the company claim it receives weekly shows of interest from cities all over the country about having their own tunnels.
